The pure electric XC40 Recharge has Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play built in.


Is Digital services a subscription?

Yes, up to three years of access to the services are included. After that you can buy a continuation of the subscription if you wish to continue using all the services included.


When does the Digital services subscription start and how long does it last?

A subscription lasts up to three years. If the car is new, this period starts on the retail delivery date. The subscription is linked to the car, so in the event of the car being sold, any remaining subscription time is passed on to the next owner/user.


Is all data required to run the Digital services package included?

Yes. All data is included for up to three years. This includes both for navigation and voice assistant, as well as downloading and running any type of apps (e.g. music streaming). After this period, the service can be extended as a subscription.

Please note: Digital services is only available for XC40 mild hybrids and the pure electric XC40 Recharge.

How long can I drive before I need to recharge the battery?

Depending on powertrain, a fully-charged battery can give you a projected range of up to 418km* (Twin motor) or 400km* (single motor) in mixed driving. But your real-world range is also affected by your driving style and other circumstances, such as outdoor temperature, weather, wind, topography and roads. Other factors that impact range include how much electricity you use for car functions such as heating and cooling of the car. One way to improve range is to pre-condition your car during charging so it’s already at a comfortable temperature when you go. You can also add a heat pump that saves valuable energy.

On a daily basis, you will probably fill up the battery whenever the car is parked where charging is possible – be it at home, at work or in the city. So range should not be an issue for everyday driving, provided that you have good access to charging.

* The figures are based on WLTP data obtained under specific testing conditions. The real-life driving range and energy consumption achieved under real conditions varies depending on driving behaviour and other external factors. For single motor figures are preliminary, final vehicle certification pending.


What charging times can I expect when recharging at home?

The charging time depends on the charging equipment you use and the electric installation at your home. The standard home charging cable with a household connector is primarily an auxiliary cable. Charging an empty battery to 100 per cent with this cable takes approximately 40–72 hours depending on market, at a charge rate of about 7–14 km range per hour.

For regular and considerably shorter charging times at home, we recommend a 3-phase 11 kW wallbox. This installation can give you approximately 7-8 hours charging time (from empty to 100 per cent), or around 50–60 km range per hour.

When charging at stations outside your home, the most probable situations are that you will top the battery during shorter periods of time, for example from 40 per cent to 80 per cent (11 kW AC gives around 50–60 km range per hour). And on longer trips, you may charge the car using fast-charging DC stations. At a 150 kW DC charging station, you can charge the battery from 10 to around 80 per cent in approximately 32 or 37 minutes depending on powertrain (or around 80–100 km range in 10 minutes). Just enough time to take a rest and have a meal.

What warranty does Volvo Cars have on the battery?

The Volvo Cars Warranty for the battery is 8 years or 160,000km, whichever occurs first, provided that the car and battery are maintained and used in accordance with Volvo Cars’ recommendations.


Can the battery be replaced?

If the battery or a battery module needs to be replaced, this can be done just like any other technical part of the car.


Can I use the pure electric XC40 Recharge for long-distance driving?

This pure electric compact SUV is perfectly suited for comfortable long-distance driving. And the battery’s high capacity ensures you can do so without worrying about range. If you need to charge during the journey, you can do so at an AC charging station or DC fast-charging station. At a 150 kW DC charging station, you can charge the battery from 10 to around 80 per cent in approximately 32 or 37 minutes depending on powertrain (or around 80–100 km range in 10 minutes) – just enough time to rest or have a meal during the trip.

Smart battery design means all occupants have as much space as in an ordinary XC40. This also gives uncompromised versatility and smart storage solutions. The rear load compartment capacity is 419 litres above the load floor. The battery encroaches on the space below the load floor, but this is to a large extent compensated by the front load compartment under the hood, which offers space for charging cables and other items.


How much can I tow with the pure electric XC40 Recharge?

We believe you should be able to drive pure electric without compromising on everyday versatility. That’s why the pure electric XC40 Recharge Twin can tow up to 1,800kg.


What equipment do I need to charge my pure electric XC40 Recharge easily and safely at home?

The standard-fitted home charging cable is primarily designed as an auxiliary cable for household applications. For considerably faster and more convenient charging at home, we recommend installing a 3-phase 11 kW wallbox.

Which is the fastest way to charge my pure electric XC40 Recharge on long journeys?

You will find the fastest charging at a DC fast-charging station along the route. To charge as fast as possible, we recommend you to limit the car's charging level to 80 per cent. This helps keep your charging times short because the last 20 per cent of charging takes the longest time. So charging the battery from 10 to 80 per cent at a 150kW DC charging station takes only around 32 or 37 minutes depending on powertrain. But if needed to reach your destination or the next charging station, you can choose to charge the battery up to 100 per cent using the settings in the car’s centre display.

How does the car help me to find the nearest charging station?

In countries where Google Maps includes charging stations, you can find public charging stations direct from the map in the car’s centre display or via a smartphone app. From here you can also select preferred charging stations and get guidance.


How does the battery impact safety in a collision?

The battery means there is 500 kg of extra weight that needs to be addressed in an impact – for the car’s occupants as well as for other vehicles. The battery also needs separate protection to avoid harmful leakage after a collision. By utilising a range of innovative safety solutions, Volvo Cars’ safety engineers have met all these challenges.


How much maintenance and service is needed for the pure electric XC40 Recharge?

The electric motors are sealed for life and maintenance-free. So compared to a combustion engine-propelled car, the pure electric XC40 Recharge needs much less maintenance which may result in lower running costs.


What is the life cycle carbon footprint for the XC40 Recharge pure electric compared to an XC40 plug-in hybrid or mild hybrid?

Over the full lifecycle, the XC40 Recharge pure electric’s carbon footprint will be lower compared to both the XC40 plug-in hybrid and the XC40 mild hybrid. The exact differences for the vehicle types depend on a lot of parameters, for instance the electricity mix when charging, the vehicle’s lifetime and driving behaviour.

How can I know that the car’s battery has been produced in an environmentally and socially responsible way?

Volvo Cars is committed to full traceability, helping to ensure that our customers can drive electrified Volvos knowing the raw material for the batteries has been sourced responsibly. The introduction of blockchain technology significantly boosts traceability within our cobalt supply chain. Blockchain, in conjunction with inspection on mine sites, GPS tracking, entry and exit scanning, verified logistics providers, facial recognition, ID checks, and time tracking, all contribute to a material’s traceability from a mine to the car factory.

Volvo Cars works closely with our suppliers to increase the sustainability of our products and services, including through securing responsible supply chains and making efficient use of resources. We are committed to the responsible sourcing of minerals and metals, and fully support the OECD Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-affected and High-risk Areas. In this respect, we require our battery suppliers to support our commitment to have full transparency of our cobalt supply chain, and to work towards full traceability.

Sustainability performance is a key consideration when assessing and selecting our suppliers. We monitor the performance of existing suppliers, and follow up with third party audits. We also put requirements on our battery suppliers to minimise carbon emissions during the production processes, including through the use of renewable energy. All our suppliers have to agree to the Volvo Cars' Code of Conduct for Business Partners, which includes the observation of human rights, including labour rights.
