Since launching the world’s first mass-produced fuel cell in 2013, we've overhauled its constituent parts to make the system smaller, lighter and stronger. As a result, our second generation fuel cell has the world’s highest system efficiency, consuming as little as 1kg of hydrogen per 100km. Along with its five-minute fill-up time and impressive range of 666 km (WLTP), the all-new NEXO offers a viable alternative to the combustion engine for everyday commuting and long drives alike.
*All figures are under WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure) regulations, which measure fuel, energy consumption, range and emissions in passenger vehicles in Europe. This is designed to provide figures closer to real-world driving behaviour. Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption, CO2 and electric range figures with other cars tested to the same technical procedures.

LED Headlight
The gently arching LED positioning light stretches across the entire front, flowing elegantly into the LED daytime running lights on both sides. Located above the LED headlights, they make the NEXO unmistakable on the road.
Rear Combination Lights
The LED rear combination lights feature a gleaming inner lens finish for a more premium look. They artfully combine the brake lights, tail lights and turn signal indicators for great visibility and style.
Aerodynamic Wheels
The exclusive 19” alloy wheels have been optimised to allow as much air as possible to pass smoothly over the wheel’s surface while still allowing enough air flow to reach the brakes for cooling.
Wheel Air Curtain
The wheel air curtains reduce drag by directing air over and around the front wheels via the stylish ducts within the front bumper.
Cascading Grille
Hyundai’s signature Cascading Grille has been reimagined to harmonise seamlessly with the NEXO’s light form and twin headlight design.
Retractable Door Handle
Developed for better aerodynamic efficiency, the NEXO’s retractable door handles retract automatically when travelling at speeds of more than 3 mph.
Bio-materials
Every surface in the NEXO, from the bamboo-based headliner, plastics, trim, soft skin and floor mats are UL certified bio-materials. This represents the most extensive use of such materials on any vehicle.
Steering Wheel
The sporty two-tone steering wheel features ergonomically positioned buttons so you can stay in control and operate car systems while driving safely. Paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel adjust the level of regenerative braking; allowing drivers to customise the rate at which the battery is recharged when decelerating.
Luggage Space
With a boot capacity of 461 litres (VDA), there is plenty of room for passengers and their luggage. The convenient 60/40 split-folding rear seats give you more flexibility and cargo space when you need it. The hydrogen fuel tanks have been specially designed to enable a full fold-flat floor. And with the seats folded flat, you have a generous 1,466 litres of space.

Lane Following Assist (LFA)
Lane Following Assist automatically adjusts steering to make sure the vehicle is safely inside the lane. It also uses its sensors to maintain the proper speed to keep a safe distance from the car ahead.
Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW)
Your Hyundai notifies you with a visual alert when its radars detect a vehicle in your blind spot area. If you try to change lanes in this situation, an audio warning will sound.
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning (RCCW)
To help make reversing safer-especially when you're backing out of a parking space-the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning sensors can detect a vehicle approaching from the left or right.
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA)
If a slowing or stopped a vehicle is in your path, the NEXO will warn you of a potential collision. If you don't stop in time, the system will automatically apply emergency braking to help avoid or reduce the severity of a collision.
Driver Attention Warning (DAW)
To help prevent potential accidents, this system monitors your driving patterns to detect drowsy or inattentive driving. Once detected, it alerts you with a sound cue coupled with a warning message on the instrument panel.
Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA)
This system allows the vehicle to park itself, even when you're not inside. Once you get out, the self-parking function can be started with a push of your smart key button. You can also summon the car out of its parking spot the same way.

Supervision Instrument Cluster
The digital information cluster presents important driving information with outstanding visibility. Alongside range and trip information, a power gauge lets you see how your driving style is influencing fuel consumption. The status of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems is displayed here as well as the Blind-Spot View Monitor which shows drivers both rear and side views when indicating to change lanes.
Reimagined Centre Console
Thanks to the electric motor, the traditional gear shifter is replaced by shift-by-wire buttons, creating extra space for storing personal items and mobile device charging.
Shift-by-wire buttons
Everything you need, right at your fingertips – switch between drive, neutral, reverse and park by simply using the buttons conveniently located within the centre console. The electric parking brake can be found here too.
Touchscreen Display
The 12.3” colour touchscreen displays navigation, energy consumption information, infotainment and climate controls. It also has a split screen feature so you can select up to three screens at the same time. With Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ functionality, you can connect a compatible smartphone and control your music, phone and app functions on the big screen.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What's the difference between fuel cell, electric battery and plug-in hybrid vehicle?
All three vehicles use electric traction motors, to provide drive to the wheels but there are differences as to the power source used to provide electricity to the traction motor is supplied.
For Fuel-cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) hydrogen gas from the vehicles on-board hydrogen tanks and oxygen from the air is supplied to what is called a Fuel Cell Stack (located in the engine bay), an electrochemical reaction takes place inside the Fuel Cell Stack and this reaction generates electricity to provide electrical power to the traction motor.
A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) gets its electricity to power the traction motor entirely from Lithium-ion batteries, which can be re-charged using three methods. (charging times for each method do vary)
- AC Slow – standard NZ 3-pin (8Amp) portable electric charger
- AC Fast – wall mounted single phase 7.4kW charger (recommended for home charging)
- DC Rapid – national infrastructure
Plug-in hybrids (PHEV) have a Lithium-ion battery (about 1/3 of the size of the IONIQ BEV) and only two charging methods are possible (AC Slow & AC Fast). With PHEV’s you can drive in EV Mode (all-electric mode) for up to 63km* and then the vehicles 1.6L petrol engine will take over. You can also drive using both sources of power (battery & engine).
Hybrids (HEV) have even a smaller Lithium-ion battery (1.56KWh) and the only way this battery is recharged is by the vehicles 1.6L petrol engine.

What is a fuel cell?
It is a device that converts chemical potential energy from hydrogen into electrical energy.
How do I refuel the NEXO?
The Hyundai NEXO Fuel Cell SUV requires hydrogen gas to be filled under high pressure (up to 700bar) into its on-board hydrogen storage tanks. This is done using a specific type of re-fuelling infrastructure. Hyundai New Zealand is one of the founding members of the New Zealand Hydrogen Association and is currently working with a number of New Zealand companies to commission New Zealand’s first hydrogen re-fuelling station.
How long does it take to fill up the NEXO Hydrogen tank?
It takes 5 minutes to fuel a NEXO (700bar) at a commercial fuelling station.
How far can I drive with on full tank?
You can travel up to 666 km on full hydrogen tanks (WLTP*).
*The Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) is a global harmonised standard for determining the levels of pollutants and CO2 emissions, fuel or energy consumption, and electric range from light-duty vehicles (passenger cars and light commercial vans).
What type of maintenance is required for the hydrogen tank?
Hydrogen tanks are maintenance free, but will require periodic safety inspections.
How safe is the hydrogen tank?
The hydrogen storage tanks used in NEXO have undergone strict testing, certification to meet ISO standards. The tanks themselves are over one inch thick made of carbon fibre and consist of a five multi-layer structure to ensure they are impact resistant, stress resistant, fire resistant and have good shock absorption.
When will the NEXO be available for purchase in New Zealand?
Until refuelling infrastructure is in place we are not in a position to sell NEXO. By registering your interest here you will be notified when it does become available.
How much does a NEXO cost?
